Get Involved

There are multiple ways that you can get involved in politics. These actions range from local research to standing as a candidate during an election campaign.

Here are 5 ways that you can personally get involved in politics today.

1. Be informed

Take note of the needs and challenges within your local area and make your Local Councillor or MP aware of those needs. If it’s within your power and right to do so, consider what you could personally do to address the needs identified.

3. Volunteer

Ask for opportunities to volunteer for your local government or for a political party. Organisations are always on the lookout for proactive volunteers who can help further their mission.

2. Find a party to support

Find a political party that shares your true values and choose a way to support them. There are various ways you can do this. Some methods are free (such as sharing their manifesto) and others require a small investment (such a becoming a member).

4. Run as a local Councillor

As long as you meet the general qualifications set by the Electoral Commission, you can run in any local election as an Independent Candidate or as a representative of a political party (check the individual party rules to see if you meet their criteria). If enough people vote for you, you have the chance of becoming the next elected Local Councillor for your Ward! Through this role you have the opportunity to directly stand up for the rights and support the needs of residents within your designated Ward.

5. Run as a Member of Parliament (MP)

As an Independent Candidate or as a member of a political party, take part in the general elections for the prospect to become a MP to represent your constituency in Parliament.
